Athena Frasca is joining the AmeriCorps team at GEP to serve as the After School Enrichment Aide. Athena is a Grinnell College student ('23) focusing on biology and French who also has experience tutoring students virtually in English as a Second Language.
Athena's role as After School Enrichment Aide directly serves students in the Grinnell community. She collaborates with Drake Community Library and Grinnell College Museum of Art to provide quality, community-based after school programs that focus on art and literacy.
This year, Athena's projects include:
Organizing and running the Tuesday Dance Parties at the Library. The goal of this program is to provide a fun, active event that will get kids and caregivers moving while maintaining an arts and literacy focus. The program also provides an opportunity to strengthen community ties and relationships through community volunteers. Grinnell community volunteers read a dance- or music-related story to attendees, show off their dance moves to culturally diverse music, and discuss the story they read with the group.
Coordinating virtual homework help for Grinnell middle schoolers in cooperation with Drake Community Library and GCMoA. Athena serves alongside Grinnell College student volunteers to provide drop-in tutoring for local students.
Hosting virtual after-school programming specifically for LINK and Grinnell Community Daycare, which engages kids in artwork from the GCMoA collection through visual thinking strategy (VTS) and hands-on art projects.
