Food Drive on MLK Day

Hunger has been a growing concern for many families during the coronavirus pandemic. 11% of folks in Poweshiek county are considered "food-insecure," and hidden within that fact is that 15% of children and 12% of seniors in our county don’t have access to the food they need (MICA Community Assessment, 2020). These statistics especially affect residents living in rural areas. MICA has been helping roughly 100 households a month during the COVID pandemic.

In order to combat hunger in Poweshiek and surrounding counties, GEP AmeriCorps volunteers will be collecting food donations on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 18, 2021. Please drop off any non-perishable items at the north (5th Avenue) entrance of Drake Community Library. All donations will be collected Grinnell Education Partnership AmeriCorps members and distributed by MICA. Families in the area are particularly in need of the following:

  • Snack food, such as cookies, crackers, chips, and granola bars

  • Rice

  • Oatmeal

  • Cereal

  • Canned Beans

  • Pasta

  • Bottled Water

There will be a tote for collection outside of the north entrance to the library from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but if you would like to practice a remote drop off, please arrive between 12-1 p.m. or between 4:30-5:30 p.m. There will be volunteers available to retrieve your donations from the trunk or the backseat of your car to practice safe social distancing.

If you would like to contribute a monetary donation, please visit this site to give.
